Authentic Bangladeshi Beef Curry

It’s ideal to enjoy this spicy beef curry with pita bread or naan in addition to plain basmati rice.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5 green chile peppers, finely sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 3 whole cardamom seeds
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 ½ (2 inch) cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 pounds boneless beef chuck, cut into 1-1/2-inch pieces

    Directions

Step 1.

Put some olive oil in a skillet and heat it up to medium.Cook and toss the onion for around five minutes, or until it has become soft and transparent. Once the onion is extremely soft and dark brown, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring, for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 2.

Add the ginger paste, cloves, cardamom seeds, garlic, green chilies, and cinnamon sticks and stir. Stir-fry for an additional three to five minutes, or until the garlic starts to brown.

Step 3.

Add water to the onion mixture along with cumin, coriander, turmeric, garlic powder, and cayenne. Let the mixture simmer until it thickens and most of the water evaporates.

Step 4.

Add the beef chuck pieces and toss until they are well coated with the spice mixture. Simmer the beef over medium-low heat, stirring from time to time, for approximately one and a half hours, or until it is soft and cooked through.

Editor’s Remarks:

Use 5 to 6 little green chili peppers, like Thai chilies; if not available, use 2 to 3 serrano chiles or to taste. When cutting chili peppers, wear rubber gloves.

Instructions for a Slow Cooker:

Observe the first and second steps. In the slow cooker, add the onions, spice combination, and half a cup of water; set aside the remaining water. If desired, brown the meat in the skillet before adding it, then simmer on Low for 8 to 10 hours or on High for 4 to 6 hours. If you prefer your curry to be thinner, add the reserved water.

Directions for a Pressure Cooker:

Instead of using a skillet, saute the onions and spices in the pressure cooker. In Step 4, add the beef and cover. Bring to high pressure and simmer for approximately 40 minutes, or until beef is tender. After cooking, let the pressure release normally.
